There are two major factors that led to the rise of the traditional American tattoo style. The two are the invention of the excellent electric tattoo machines and the appearance of drawn designs tattoo shops' walls or displayed on sheets portfolios. The style is characterized by the use of the limited colors and thick black imagery.

Some of the common tattoo symbols that define this type comprises eagle and the American flag, with the two to present patriotism.
